The “Not-So-Scary” Guide to DBT Groups: Is This Therapy or School? (Yes.)

So, you’ve heard the term DBT (Dialectical Behavior Behavior Therapy) and your first thought is probably: “Is this a secret society or a clinical sit-in?” Actually, it’s more like a “Life Skills 101” class with a bunch of people who are just as tired of being “overwhelmed by feelings” as you are. Whether you’re joining us in a cozy office or via a laptop screen, here is the lowdown on what actually happens in a DBT group.

Q: Is this one of those “How does that make you feel?” groups?

A: Not exactly! While we care about your feelings, DBT is psychodynamic in its roots but classroom-style in its execution. We aren’t just sitting in a circle venting about our childhoods. We are learning how to drive our own brains. Think of it this way: In individual therapy, you process your past. In DBT group, you’re learning the manual for your future. It’s less “therapy circle” and more “Masterclass for your Mind.”

Q: What’s the vibe? Classroom or Clinic?

A: Definitely more classroom. There’s a curriculum! We have handouts, we have homework (don’t worry, no one is grading you), and we have “modules” like Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness.

Q: Do I have to talk to the other people?

A: You get to! One of the best parts of a DBT group is realizing you aren’t the only one who struggles with “The Big Emotions.”

  • In-Person: You’ll see the same faces every week, share a snack, and practice skills together.
  • Telehealth: You’ll see the “Brady Bunch” grid of faces. It’s surprisingly intimate! You’re in your own space, but you’re connected by a shared goal.

Over time, these “classmates” become your tribe. You’ll hear someone share a win about not losing their cool at the DMV, and the whole group will actually get why that’s a huge deal.

Q: How does it work on Telehealth? Is it awkward?

A: Only for the first 5 minutes! After that, it’s super efficient. We use screen-sharing to look at slides, and worksheets together. Plus, you get to wear pajama pants. It’s a win-win.

Q: What is the “Wise Mind” everyone keeps talking about?

A: That’s the “Big Self” we’re aiming for. It’s that sweet spot where your logical brain and your emotional brain shake hands and agree on a plan. We spend a lot of time learning how to find that center point so you stop making decisions based solely on a temporary mood swing.

Q: What if I’m bad at it?

A: You can’t be “bad” at DBT. The whole point is “Doing What Works.” If a skill doesn’t work for you, we find one that does. It’s all about flexibility. We’re just here to give you a bigger toolbox so you don’t have to use a hammer for every problem.
